Information about DNS and network

If I’m not mistaken, the DNS resolver just asks the root server where is let’s say the .com TLD. It then answers “Verisign” and the resolver asks Verisign where is “example” in its database. I was searching for a good family filtering dns, after browsing for a while I found cleanbrowsing to be pretty effective but turns out it blocks reddit too.
