I’m running bind 9.11.3 on Ubuntu 18.04 – on a kubernetes cluster. If I have all of the RFC 1918 space under allow-query, everything is happy. if I only have `localnets` in allow-query, CoreDNS is not permitted to query, even though the server has an interface on the same network as the denied client. … Read More “Odd BIND9 client denial” »

Does anyone has have (or had) DynDNS services? (https://dyn.com) Mine is up for renewal at 300% increase! There’s no way their dynamic IP services are worth $55 CAD / year. I’ve been with them for >15 years (nearly as long as they’ve been around I think!). I use it for personal/residential use. service … Read More “DynDNS Dynamic IP Pricing Bloat” »

Hi, as you may know Android 9 added the ability to use a Private DNS for your connections. Cloudflare supports it by inputting “1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com” in the Private DNS field. As you can see, you have to input an hostname as a DNS. My question is: how can this hostname be resolved? Is it using other … Read More “How Private DNS is resolved?” »

Hey all I have example.com as a domain. There is an associated SOA, NS and MX for example.com. There is also an A record for example.com but that IP is not associated with them. Why is that? I’ve been looking at other domains and have noticed the same (except for service providers they use their … Read More “domain A record” »

What’s the Thinking Here?

I’ve been tasked with cleaning up the DNS records for our domains. We have a lot but only actively use a few. I’ve come across a couple of A records like: “*.example.com A 7200 0.0.0.0” or “*.example.com A 7200 “ Any idea what they were going for here? ‘Cause I don’t really see the point. … Read More “What’s the Thinking Here?” »

Any truly free or low cost providers for a single DNS?

I have been a big dyndns user for a number of years but my usage has steadily declined to just needing a single domain/DNS. $55/year is a bit much for a single DNS in my mind. I’m exploring some of the free options but there always seems to be a catch, i have … Read More “Any truly free or low cost providers for a single DNS?” »

Hello! Ive been tasked with an odd goal, so I wanted to bring it up with yall. Ive been tasked with “Hiding” an DNS address by making it fail internally on our network, and then pointing towards it with another DNS entry. The actual reasoning for this is we are using a … Read More “Setting up partial authority on a DNS server?” »
