Can’t understand AXFR zone transfers

Ok I am trying to wrap my head around transfers and syncing zones from one bind server to another. I have dig AXFR domain.com @master.com working from the slave but it does not create a zone file or an entry in /etc/named.conf. Shouldn’t that happen?
